A night at the Four Seasons Mexico City
After all these busy days exploring the culture and heritage of Mexico in San Miguel de Allende, Puebla and Mexico City (or Ciudad de Mexico as it‘s actually called here), I was up to spend my last night of the more „cultural“ week in a luxurious retreat. Thanks to my Indonesian friend, it didn‘t take long to convince me I need to check out the Four Seasons Mexico City. While his stay was unfortunately limited to seeing the property only (years ago he didn‘t feel safe to leave the hotel), I was fond of Mexico City already and being my fifth night in town, and my intentions were no else than his: to enjoy the Four Seasons as much as possible. My bus from Puebla had an enormous delay, and so I ended up being at the airport of Mexico City at around somewhat 6 pm instead of 4 pm. Needless to say that my arrival at the hotel was as late - at around 7 pm my Uber Black was driving into the vast entrance. Doors opened, and I was greeted in a friendly way: Bienvenidos al Four Seasons. Crossing the lobby, I was shown to the front desk, coming in a brand new design as the entire property completed its refurbishment recently.
Check-in was super friendly and very personal. After I told the two attendants that I was going to Four Seasons Punta Mita afterwards, they made me feel welcome and like at home from the first moment. One of the friendly bellmen showed me up to the room and explained the facilities at the property to me. My room - a regular Deluxe King - was situated on the seventh floor overlooking the prettiest courtyard in the entire city. Upon opening the door, the first thing that came to my mind was the spacious layout with an entree that had lots of storage space for my suitcase. On the left side was the bathroom with vanity desk, bathtub, a walk-in-shower shower as well as a separated toilet and bidet. While the bathrooms haven‘t been redone completely (some actually were), I didn‘t find them uncomfortable and liked the red ceiling to revamp the toilet. All the toiletries were by L‘Occitane as usual at most of the Four Seasons, and the pre-ordered nail kit was already waiting inside the bathroom as was a shaving and dental kit - everything pre-ordered via the fabulous Four Seasons App. Even though I am not a fan of hotel chain apps and I usually never download them, I actually always use the Four Seasons App simply because I love to chat with the staff to arrange all the things I want while chilling at the pool - no need to head back to the room to call the concierge anymore.
Be it requesting extra toiletries, pillows, extra bed or actually arranging stuff like transfers or guided tours to even make sure to get a late check-out or having a romantic spot set up for a candlelight dinner. I love the app and hope they enhance it further with let‘s say city maps with recommendations by hotel staff or a small online dictionary for countries where they don‘t speak English as their primary language. Back to the facts, the bedroom was very spacious and had a super comfy Four Seasons bed in very cool wood design, a writing desk with chair, a sideboard with television and many English speaking channels as well as a sofa with a coffee table. I absolutely loved the generous welcome amenities consisting of a cheese plate, a bottle of Evian as well as a bottle of excellent red wine from Spain. Of course, the welcome letter was handwritten as you would expect from a hotel of this calibre. At this point, I need to highlight the fantastic housekeeping team who did an incredible job and even set up the room again on the next morning as they knew I had a late check out at 5 pm. This way, I could enjoy another nap before my flight to the Pacific Coast.
How to spend two cool days in a city hotel without leaving it? Well at this Sanctuary in the heart of Mexico City - spoiler alert the location is terrific directly on Paseo de Reforma - you have got plenty of options. There is an Italian fine dining restaurant, a Mexican outlet famous for its grilled fish as well as the Fifty Mils. The latter one was the absolute highlight of my stay (besides the flawless service) with the best cocktails I have had in Latin America - it‘s definitely not a lie if they call themselves „Best Bar in Mexico“ - I mean that they are number 45 of the world‘s best bars says it all. I had a flight of three different cocktails, and all of them were delicious and flavorful. All of the mixologists were very dedicating and even addressed me by my name, which was incredible. Being it late and having had food since breakfast, I was up to get a simple but tasty burger. No problem at such a hotel obviously and I found the price of around 15 USD including service and tax fair considering it was big and came with a few sauces. If you want to treat yourself get a portion of these amazing truffle fries! Never would I have expected to have truffle fries in Mexico, but actually that wasn‘t the only surprise on my trip.
No need to mention that the Four Seasons bed excellently did his job, and I could get some excellent sleep. Since I was in for a sumptuous Sunday Brunch, I skipped breakfast and went to the health club and pool instead. It seems that the gym and pool are located on top of a separate building but connected on the third floor if I am not mistaken. There is a pool of right size which comes heated. Furthermore, they also have a jacuzzi in the corner, which is a bit warmer and the lounge chairs around the pool area for a bit of relaxation or the first sunburn of the trip for me. Fun aside, I found the gym to be a good size for a city hotel and the view of the pool makes working-out a better experience than at other hotels in Mexico City. When it was actually time for the brunch, I was really excited since some friends who lived in Mexico City were referring to it as the best in town.
Being served in the main restaurant of the hotel, all the food stations are distributed around the back of the courtyard with a sushi station at Fifty Mils, a grill station in the middle of the garden and a Mexican corner on the other side. The buffet was set up on the main bar of the restaurant with plenty of seafood, salads, Mexican dishes and a pasta station. I ended up spending almost 1.5 hours enjoying the brunch as the atmosphere was just incredible with the sun falling into the courtyard and the service being on par. They have three kinds of services: the first comes with one glass of sparkling wine, the second one is a free-flow sparkling wine offer (some unknown champagne brand), and then there is the free flow Moet&Chandon offer. While I would have loved to opt for the latter one (around 70 USD per person), I thought that the middle one would absolutely do the job and indeed I believe it was the most decent choice as the majority of the other guests went for the same. Since I didn‘t try any other brunch in town, I can‘t say whether it‘s actually the best one in Mexico City. However, it was the best one I had so far (which even tops President Wilson in Geneva), and I think that says a lot already.
Overall, the Four Seasons Mexico City is an absolutely fabulous property and at this point I have to say that a trip to the capital of Mexico is not complete if you haven‘t stayed here or let‘s say at least been to the famous Fifty Mils bar - indeed worth the Uber ride from any corner of the town. I truly loved the very attentive service, spacious rooms and food and beverage offer as well as the privacy effect this property enjoys with its secured courtyard. This means nobody who has no reason for entrance is not permitted inside the property, which makes it an excellent place for first timers travelling to the Ciudad de Mexico and not trusting the city yet. After all, Four Seasons is a brand you can always be sure to have an amazing stay as I was once more convinced at Punta Mita.
